GREY SQUIRREL : Grey squirrels are active year-round and arboreal; They bring no benefit to the habitat in which they choose to live, they feed on a great variety of things, such as nuts, seeds, fungi, fruits, and the cambium layer of tree bark, as well as eggs and chicks of many birds. Common and destructive pest, especially damages trees of which die when de-barked. A carrier of the squirrel pox virus a major threat to our native, protected red squirrel in many parts of the UK.
CARRION CROW : Major predator on game and songbirds, eggs and chicks, will also peck eyes from newborn lambs.
FERAL PIGEON: Often referred to as the 'flying rat' Feral Pigeons can carry several species of mites which can cause severe irritation of the skin. Numerous secondary insects are found infesting their droppings. Because of all the bacteria, fungal agents and ectoparasites found in pigeon droppings they can be considered a health hazard. Creates mess and damage to buildings – Roost in seed/grain sheds, not only feeding but also fowling your grain/seed stores making your harvest unfit for human consumption - thousands of pounds lost.
COLLARED DOVE: Same size as protected Turtle dove but Collared variety can steal and soil large quantities of stored grain in farmyards.
ROOK: Although officially a pest and predator, at certain times of the year they can be beneficial to agriculture, eating harmful insect pests.
WOODPIGEON: The UK population is estimated at between six and eight million birds. Main foods are seeds and cereal crops. Large winter flocks can cause considerable damage to crops on farmland. Vast flocks hover-up crops in all parts of the UK costing thousands of pounds in lost revenue each year.
RABBIT: The UK Rabbit population is now estimated to be about 37.5 million pre-breeding animals. A female rabbit can produce around 20 offspring each year. As a result the rabbit is now the most commonly seen mammal in Britain. When the population peaks in summer there can be as many as 300 million! In their present numbers rabbits can be a serious pest to farmers by causing reduced crop yields, damage to trees, young saplings and erosion of ground around their warrens. Consequently, in the interests of crop and environment protection, they need to be controlled.
RAT: Public enemy number one. A recent survey in the UK suggested that at any one time - you will never be more than 10 feet away from a Brown Rat - where ever you are ! And as a consequence of the current bad floods (2000/2001) there is every reason to believe that they will be even closer ! Untold millions of pounds worth of damage worldwide plus carrier of several highly dangerous diseases.
NEVER HANDLE A RAT WITH YOUR HANDS
MAGPIE: One of the most voracious and destructive predatory pests, hitting young broods of songbirds in particular, raiding nests of game birds and destroying eggs. If the magpie population is strong on your land it is very unlikely you will hear any song birds singing because they prefer to nest well away from magpie territory, where they feel safe.
There are other birds, like jays and jackdaws which are defined as pests, but don’t as a rule pose the same threat as those listed.
